How to Play Golf

The question of how to play golf is a bit of a broad one and for the purposes of this post I am going to give you a couple of pointers on how to play golf so that you enjoy the game/play to the best of your ability.

People play worse than their best for a number of reasons – some of which seem strange.

How to play golf How to Play GolfThe game of golf is a recreation and something to look forward to at the end of the week, once a month or maybe even just once a year at the annual company outing.  The point is we want to enjoy the limited opportunities we have to play the game and therefore hope to do our best each and every time we play.  An opportunity missed is an opportunity lost.

So we try too hard!

We concentrate on the score at the end of the day even before we have played our first tee shot.

Maybe we just try too hard not to make a fool of ourselves.

Or the oldest and most often repeated mistake of trying to hit the ball too hard!  A long drive is so impressive!

If you really want to know how to play golf well you need to understand that the purpose of the game is to enjoy yourself – that could include the odd bad round.  It means enjoy the outing and concentrate on each shot – not the overall score.  Sometimes you can play a great shot and have a bad bounce and bad result – it does not change the fact that it was a great shot!

Getting the club on to the ball consistently will go a long way to helping with your overall score and therefore your score and enjoyment of the game.

It doesn’t matter if it is a drive off the tee, a long iron approach to the green, a chip or a putt, you have to get the club and the ball to meet to the best of your ability.

The pros that make a living out of the game know how to play golf but we still hear the commentators talk about them “coming down the stretch”  under pressure and that the best way for them to handle the pressure is to treat it like any other golf shot. That’s what we should do with every shot – treat it just like any other shot and enjoy the sensation.

Here is my final tip to all golfers on how to play golf to the best of your ability:

Get something like The Simple Golf Swing (a time tested and successful golf e-book) and practice and perfect everything that is taught in there and stick with it.  Don’t listen to anyone else unless you have completed whatever instruction manual you decided on and found it doesn’t work.

Chopping, changing and taking advice is a sure way of confusing you totally and will not help you learn how to play golf or improve your game.  I know plenty of golfers who have been going for lessons for years and have not improved their handicap by one shot.

The Simple Golf Swing guarantees an improvement of 7 shots in under 2 weeks!

Now it didn’t do that for me but I was happy to drop my handicap by 6 shots to single figures in 3 months!
